Education Abroad Program Guides

Client: University of California: Education Abroad Program
Year: 2006, 2007
Typefaces: Trade Gothic Bold Condensed, Caecilia
Deliverable: 8.5"x11" soft cover wrap

Every year the University of California Education Abroad Program publishes guidebooks for over 50 countries and special programs. Each guidebook cover is a universal pre-printed shell with the specific title imprinted later for each location. The covers must convey a sense of going abroad without any specific geographic or cultural icons, since the same design must work for France, South Africa, and Japan. I tackled ths problem for two consecutive years, designing the cover and setting up the template for production artists to easily plug in the relevant text.

The "suitcase" cover for the 2006-07 academic year:

EAP Guides

Based on this shell:

The "signpost" cover for the 2007-08 academic year:

EAP Guides

Based on the following shell. The "signpost" imprint required skewed text and closer alignment than usual. The covers were quite effective in this way, since they didn't look like what you'd expect from a standardized template.
