Mason Bates is a contemporary composer who integrates electronica, sampling, and found recordings into his orchestral works. The San Francisco Symphony recorded several of his pieces for this Grammy-nominated album.

Bates drew inspiration from various aspects of technology and the natural world. From samples of NASA recordings to electrons humming in a nuclear reactor to the rumble of calving glaciers, it seems to encompass the whole world, from minute to enormous.
